September 11th Memorial Service
On Sunday, September 11th, the Mid-Island Y JCC and 15 area organizations, including Congregation Beth-El, worked in partnership to commemorate the 10th anniversary of September 11, 2001. We came together as a community in song, speech, and memoriam. The program featured a children’s chorus, accounts from local survivors, a short memorial service and a keynote address by Dr. Benjamin Luft, MD, Director of Stony Brook’s WTC Medical Monitoring and Treatment Program. After the program, etched rocks were placed around the base of the tree that was planted in memory/honor of 9-11.

HEY CLASS PROJECT ~ February 22, 2011
This years hey class organized a book drive for their mitzvah project. They collected 400 books which were donated to the Jewish Child Care Association at the Forest Hills Day Care Center, which supports and reinforces Jewish family life and education through a day care and universal kindergarten program. The school serves children ages 2 through 6. On February 22, 2011 (presidents week) we took a trip into Queens and delivered the books to the school. The school’s director and staff gave us a warm welcome and the children were so excited to have visitors. Jacob and Sarah were each escorted to their own classroom where the children were eagerly awaiting their visit. Sarah and Jacob each read a book of their choosing to their respective classrooms. Even Jacob’s brother Eric read to the children. Then they distributed books to the children there, and played with them before we left. It was a fun day for all.
