Through donations of recyclables, we netted a few hundred dollars. For quite some time the number stood at nearly $800. Having made further requests both through this column and at Congregation Board meetings, we suddenly had amassed $1727. What a wonderful feeling it was to know that so many had cared and wanted to make a difference in the life of a young Israeli girl and her mother. But the story does not end here. The check had not been cut yet, and at a recent evening minyan, I remarked that we were just $72 short of $1800, which seems like a nice Jewish number. If any two people would be willing to donate $36 each, I'll add the extra dollars and we can cut a check. At the conclusion of minyan, an elder congregant who is mourning the loss of his wife came up to me and handed me $80 from his wallet and said something like: "Here, now you can send the check". I was flabbergasted by this instant gesture of generosity, which served to remind me that people can be generous at a moment's notice. While I do not have the final tally yet, I will share it with you next month, because a number of checks came in, and I wouldn't be surprised if the final total approacher $2000.
So, thank you to all those who generously supported this worthwhile project. If you would like to read about the Bat Mitzvah, please connect to the Internet with your computer and type in http://connectionsisrael.com and then click on the blue box on the right that says "Sderot Group Bat Mitzvah--January 2010". May our generosity make a difference in the lives of these young ladies.
