The eShofar

From the Religious School

by Hazzan Jeffrey Myers, Education Director

The school year is always about new beginnings: new teacher; new classroom; new books; new expectations; new clothes.  Something begins well when the set-up work has been thorough.  Properly beginning a new school year requires not only effort on the part of the school, but effort from the home as well.  A supportive, nurturing environment that values Jewish education and respects the institution will see great strides.  When Jewish education is merely one of the myriad of extracurricular activities planned for your child, or a parent says “I hated Hebrew High but I survived: so will you” or “Just get through your Bar Mitzvah – that’s why we joined”, then the proper pre-conditions have been set for the endeavor to fail.

The above attitudes would not be encouraged in the home for a public school education.  Why should our glorious Jewish heritage be demeaned?  Why should our efforts be doomed to failure prior to the child setting foot in the building?  We ask for your cooperation, participation and respect – CPR – to make your child’s Jewish education a worthwhile and meaningful part of his or her life.  We want to plant the foundation seed that we can nurture and grow into a vibrant seedling, with continued care will grow into a hardy tree with deep roots and solid branches capable of standing on its own.  Help us fulfill this vision by starting the year on the right footing.
